How to Estimate a Painting Job
Painting estimates require calculating wall area, ceiling area, trim, and cabinet doors separately. Here is the formula.
Accurate painting estimates start with accurate measurements. Wall area is calculated by measuring the perimeter of the room and multiplying by the ceiling height, then subtracting windows and doors. Ceiling area is length times width. Trim is measured in linear feet.
For labor pricing, walls are typically priced per square foot at a rate that accounts for prep, primer if needed, and finish coats. Ceilings are priced separately — often at a lower rate for simple ceilings and higher for textured or high ceilings. Trim is priced per linear foot. Cabinet doors are priced per door.
Material costs include paint, primer, tape, drop cloths, and roller covers. A typical interior room requires one to two gallons of paint per coat per 400 square feet of wall area.
BidForeman calculates painting quantities automatically from room measurements entered during the walkthrough.
